HAIR LOSS TREATMENT

Hair loss treatment for men in NZ.

A doctor-led assessment of what's actually driving your hair loss, and the medical options that fit it. Telehealth, anywhere in New Zealand.

This service is for men. Finasteride is not indicated for women or children, and hair loss in women often has different causes — if you're a woman experiencing hair loss, see your GP or ask for a dermatology referral.

    Honest expectations

Two things men are routinely misled about, so we'll say them plainly. First, medical treatment for pattern hair loss is ongoing — the finasteride 1 mg data sheet states the effect reverses within 12 months of stopping. Second, it generally does more to keep the hair you have than to bring back hair that's already gone. Response varies between individuals, and no treatment works for everyone. If your expectations and what the medication realistically does don't line up, we'd rather tell you at the assessment than take your money.

    Hair loss assessment $120 · 30 minutes

You're paying for the assessment and the clinical decision, not for access to a product. Any prescription medicine is on the standard NZ pathway, dispensed at your community pharmacy — and topical minoxidil doesn't need a prescription at all, so if that's all you need, you can buy it straight from a pharmacy without booking anything.

    Prescription Medicine

Active ingredient: finasteride 1 mg film-coated tablets.

What it is for: Finasteride 1 mg is registered in New Zealand for the treatment of men with male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia), to increase hair growth and prevent further hair loss. It is not indicated for use in women or children.

Risks and benefits: Finasteride has both benefits and risks. In clinical studies the most common adverse effects were decreased libido (1.8% vs 1.3% on placebo) and erectile dysfunction (1.3% vs 0.7%). Effects reported after the medicine was marketed include depression and suicidal ideation, decreased libido and sexual dysfunction that continued after treatment was stopped, breast tenderness or enlargement, testicular pain, and reduced fertility. Male breast cancer has been reported — tell a doctor promptly about any lump, pain or nipple discharge. Women who are or may become pregnant must not take or handle the tablets. Whether this medicine is suitable for you depends on your history and is a decision for your consultation.

Further information: Consumer Medicine Information for medicines registered in New Zealand is published by Medsafe at medsafe.govt.nz. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about the risks and benefits for you.

Topical minoxidil — a pharmacy medicine

Topical minoxidil is a pharmacy-only medicine in New Zealand for dermal use at 5% or less. You can buy it from a pharmacy without a prescription and without seeing us. It is registered for androgenetic alopecia, and can cause scalp irritation and unwanted hair growth where it is applied or transferred. We'll tell you plainly at the assessment if it's the only thing you need — that is not something you have to pay a consultation for.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A 30-minute video consultation with an NZ-registered doctor. We look at your pattern of loss, how quickly it's changing, your family history, and the other things that can cause or worsen hair loss — thyroid problems, iron deficiency, medications, significant stress. Where it's useful we'll request bloods at your local lab. You'll leave with a clear picture of what's happening and what the realistic options are.

No. Prescriptions are issued where they're clinically appropriate, and part of the value of the assessment is being told when medication isn't the right step — or when something other than pattern hair loss is driving what you're seeing. The consultation is what you're paying for, not a guaranteed script.

No. Response varies between individuals, and no treatment for pattern hair loss works for everyone. Medical treatment generally does more to hold on to the hair you still have than to bring back hair that's already gone — which is why starting earlier tends to give you more to work with.

Treatment for pattern hair loss is ongoing. The Medsafe data sheet for finasteride 1 mg states that withdrawal from treatment leads to reversibility of effect within 12 months — in other words, stopping means losing the benefit. That's worth understanding before you start, not after.

Not quickly. The finasteride 1 mg data sheet notes that in general, daily use for three months or more is needed before increased hair growth or prevention of further loss is observed. Judging it before then isn't meaningful.

No — and Enhanced Men does not take bookings for hair transplant consultations or surgery. This assessment is about non-surgical medical management. Hair transplant surgery is a separate, in-person procedure performed at Gro Clinics, a different business. If you want to understand that side, our founder's practice is described on the Dr Jack Yeoman page.

This service is for men. Finasteride 1 mg is not indicated for women or children, and hair loss in women often has different causes that need a different workup. If you're a woman experiencing hair loss, see your GP or ask for a dermatology referral.

The hair loss assessment is $120 for a 30-minute consultation. Any medication is on the standard NZ prescription pathway and dispensed at your community pharmacy.
